Ripley Gardens is an urban oasis which transformed an abandoned Minnesota landmark into quality mixed-income homes. The 52 rental apartments and 8 owner-occupied townhomes were once the site of the Dr. Martha Ripley Maternity Hospital, where pioneer Dr. Ripley cared for everyone, regardless of financial means. This development restored three historic buildings dating to early 1900s and added three new buildings. Energy efficient appliances and beautiful rain gardens are some of the many ways the historic preservation incorporated environmentally friendly building measures. Aeon, the nonprofit developer of Ripley Gardens, and the City of Minneapolis were recently honored with the National Award of Excellence for Sustainable Community Development.
