Merriam Park

Built 1912
Richard and Shirley Erstad
We like patina and authenticity. That’s guided our 23-year restoration of our 1912 home and most recently, its kitchen. Everything in the kitchen is period and hides modern features—but they are there. Our 1927 refrigerator (built in St. Paul), a double oven, six-burner stove and working dial phone contrast with the hidden freezer drawers, microwave and dishwasher. All light fixtures, hardware and doors were salvaged antiques. Varying counter heights, cabinet colors and designs and hardware add to the look. South-facing windows wrap around the old washboard sink. The added main floor bath features a walk-in rainfall shower and 1920s sink and toilet. The backyard has a sauna modeled on old Norwegian architecture. Featured in Old House Journal June 2020.
