Macalester Groveland

Macalester Groveland

Built 1922
Roopali Phadke and Michael Arquin
Built as both a church AND the pastor’s residence, the 40’x40’ footprint was originally a modest one story with three small rooms and a larger public room. As time passed, the neighborhood grew with taller homes and ours became the runt. With three kids, we decided to put on a second story that allowed for more generous kids’ bedrooms, more common space, and remarkable hidden storage. We added an ample front porch fitting the neighborhood culture of kids playing across the front yards. The two-story craftsman-detailed home now blends in. Since 2018, the year we received BLEND Awards, we buried utilities, added a garage ready for a living green roof, shed and rain-garden landscaping that reflect our commitment to the environment.
